Session Spotlight: Inclusive Transitions

Term time is starting back up really soon, and we would like to shed some light on one of our slightly newer sessions and all of the wonderful things it does... Inclusive Transitions!

Four indivduals waiting for independent travel on the bus
The gang ready for an Inclusive Transitions afternoon!

So, what is it? The session is aimed at young individuals between the ages of 14-25 living with special educational needs and disabilities in the Solihull area. We have plenty on throughout the week for younger audiences at our in-house sessions, however we wanted something that allowed our older CYP to get out and about, as well as working on their developmental needs.

There is a uniqueness to this project which is to improve participants confidence in public, and we do this by ensuring that in every session there is an aspect of public transport. Whether it’s via the bus or train, we allow the young person to board themselves, as well as pay independently for them to gain the skills they need to get out and about solo. We like to reiterate that although public transport can be a source of anxiety to those who are neuro-diverse, it can be fun, practical and a form of freedom within their local community.

Just a few places that we have taken our participants during Inclusive Transitions have been escape rooms, laser quests, meals, trips to the city and bowling. All within a space in which everyone can get familiar with each other, make friends and the session turns into a social event that they look forward to. That hint of supported independence ensures that their confidence and self esteem is boosted, with workers that are also on scheme just in case any additional help is required.

This also reduces isolation and provides a form of respite for parents and carers, whilst providing an opportunity to get out into the community and experience new places. This all comes at an affordable and accessible price, that is always documented and show-cased across our social media channels so you can see your loved one’s growth first hand.
